The $32,000 Nut

How can a single nut be worth that much money? Well, it’s not hard, and if you are forced to replace all of your vertical wear strips on a spiral, chances are you have had a bad nut somewhere.

Let us explain-

In the above photo you can see the edge of a connector rod as it comes from the factory (left side). You can also see a rod end, with a small nut which has been field welded by someone who put a splice in a metal belt (right side). The difference is drastic, the potential damage is substantial, and the worst part of all of this is that the results will not be seen until the belt is flipped over in the future.

You can avoid this from happening by paying close attention to the splice methods you use on your metal belts (by the way you will not have this problem with plastic belts).

Make sure that your personnel are well trained on the proper method of spicing your belts, especially the very real and bad affects that a bad connector point can have on your system. Not only will it cost you money to replace the wear strips, loss of production, unscheduled down time and belt damage are also parts of this potential cost to you.

There are already enough bad nuts in the world, let’s not create more.
